Air pollution: Before and now

Air pollution: Before and now

As we are tackling the global pandemic, it seems like other issues have been put in second place. Climate change and pollution are some of them. It is now a scientific fact that all restrictions undertaken have not only affected humans but the whole ecosystem. In this encounter, nature gets the better end of the deal. But there is also another way of looking at it. A National Geographic Explorer, John D. Sitter reports that air pollution is extremely harmful in the middle of a global pandemic as it attacks our lungs and affects heavily our immune system.

The WHO estimates that air pollution kills over 7 million people per year. There is also a vivid difference between cities around the world who are more affected than others. One of the differences in the everyday amount of fossil fuels emitted. The first region to spot the highest reduction of emissions was upper China during the strict lockdown. NASA satellite images have shown that in only one month NO2 density dropped to a minimum. Sadly there was an immediate yo-yo effect after they loosen up the restrictions so the air pollution went quickly up. In the picture above, you’ll see some of the other examples of how the coronavirus limitations have limited the harmful impact of today’s economy onto a planet.

Summing up, to improve our chances of a long life we must learn to focus on the quality of the air in the place we live in. Zero-emissions solutions should be a thing to demand on our leaders during and after these difficult quarantine times. Or we will always need masks.
